“Dexter”

For the opening to the darkly comedic drama about a crime scene analyst/serial killer, composer Rolfe Kent took a melody that would have fit a 1980s-era mystery series, slowed it down, then added sonic elements designed to create tension. It’s both familiar and discomforting at the same time, strings and horns swirling up to the surface and lingering just a little too long, putting viewers on edge–right where they should be.

Showtime has released a new round of promotional posters for the new season of Dexter, which premieres on September 27. They feature his adorable son Harrison, who Rita better pray isn’t actually a chop off his father’s blood-thirsty block…

Dexter to Face a Terrible Tween on Season 4

We already know that Dexter will match wits with a fellow serial killer, played by John Lithgow, on season for of this Showtime hit. But that may actually be his least fearsome foe. According to producer Sara Colleton, Dexter will also have to deal with – cue scary music! – a teenage step-daughter.

“Astor has a little bit more attitude, and she isn’t quite as happy just to be a kid. She’s flexing her young-woman muscles, and it perplexes Dexter,” Colleton told E! News.

Moreover, everyone’s favorite mass murderer will have to deal with boy that developments feelings for young Astor.

“There’s a very hip, cool, older kid in the neighborhood whom she develops a very big crush on,” Colleton said.

As for Cody? He loves his new life, the show runner added: “[There's] a swimming pool next door and all the food that he can eat. He literally says, ‘I want to be just like Dexter.’”

Uh-oh.

Dexter: Michael C. Hall Talks About Season 4 and Webisodes

By · Wednesday, July 29th, 2009 · No Comments »

“Can I have it all?” Dexter tells his first season 4 victim before killing him, and in his interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dexter star Michael C. Hall reaffirms this premise of the upcoming season, set to kick off on September 27. Following Showtime’s release of the dark comedy’s trailer for season 4 recently, Hall maintains that it’s going to be “tough” for the new father cum blood splatter analyst cum serial killer.

“A lot of sleep deprivation. I think the idea was one thing, but the reality of being a suburban family man and maintaining an allegiance to his dark passenger is for Dexter proving to be daunting, at times overwhelming, at times reprieved, but something’s gotta give.”

That something, says some critics, is still hard to figure out at this point, when the team behind Dexter is still in the middle of production. Most, however, are expecting a lot from John Lithgow, who is set to play the main villain in Dexter season 4. Walter Simmons, the Trinity Killer is described as “the most prolific serial killer ever” or “the most successful serial killer to ever get away with it.”

Hall, for his part, says that Dexter is “definitely fascinated” and that his competitive juices are
“stoked” especially after hearing how the Trinity Killer is characterized. “They’re on a bit of a collision course right now,” teases Hall. Lithgow, 63, is a multiple Emmy-winner and is best known for his role as Dr. Dick Solomon on the NBC sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun.

Hall also confirmed that he recently did some voice-over narration for Dexter’s animated webisodes, following the serial killer’s life prior to the pilot. The first one, forĀ  instance, will focus on the first time he “collects the trophy” of his first kill.

Dexter TV Show Summary

Onetime Six Feet Under regular Michael C. Hall stars in this characteristically kinky, cutting-edge crime series from Showtime, based on a character created by novelist Jeff Lindsay. Hall was cast as Dexter Morgan, a likeable, self-effacing Miami police forensic expert specializing in blood-splatter analysis — who secretly moonlighted as a serial killer. Early on, Dexter’s homicidal tendencies were detected by his adoptive police officer father, Harry (James Remar), who encouraged his son to channel his violent impulses in a positive manner, and also pounded a strict moral code into the boy.

As an adult, Dexter vowed to “take out the trash” and continue “honing his craft” by murdering other serial killers, and similar miscreants who would have otherwise slipped through the fingers of justice. Remarkably, Dexter managed to emerge a sympathetic figure via inner monologues wherein he explained his motives and modus operandi, all but encouraging the viewer to cheer him on in his bloody crusade against crime. Such was Dexter’s harmless-looking veneer that no one suspected him of being a killer: not his adoptive sister, Debra (Jennifer Carpenter), a Miami cop; nor his emotionally scarred girlfriend,

Rita (Julie Benz), who’d only recently escaped an abusive relationship with her ex-husband; nor his police superior Lt. LaGuerta (Lauren Velez). Only his colleague Sgt. Doakes (Erik King) had an inkling that there was something…er…strange about the personable Dexter — an inkling that earned Doakes Dexter’s respect. Dexter began its weekly Showtime run on October 1, 2006.
